The Launching Pad: The Best and Worst of Braves Marketing

Yes, I really don't like our "cheerleaders" either. Like you say, baseball doesn't need cheerleaders, and moreover, why do they make those girls wear shorts when its 40 degrees out?

I do like the t-shirt giveaways though. even though they have an advertisers name on them, it helps me get a lot of player shirts without having to pay 25 dollars each.. because i don't have that kind of money!

JB: Great, creative post. I gotta tell you, I love the big scoreboard, although I found it a bit distracting the first couple of games. My wife just started at it for the entire night the first time she saw it.

The Tomahawk Team is kinda annoying ... but they are kinda hot, so it's all good.

My big problem is how the folks at Turner Field go way over the top with the sound effects during the game. I can't stand some of the things you hear not only between at-bats, but DURING at-bats, between pitches. Horrible. I can see getting the crowd involved and catering to the non-passionate fan (heck, when our kids go, we spend two or three innings at Tooner Field, which I really like from the parents' standpoint ... and the TVs in there allow you to keep up with the game).

But it's just like at spring training ... the game itself is almost an after-thought. It's annoying, to say the least.

I say pull the cow down. Nothing good has happened for this team since it took its place above the left-field stands. Ugh. Slaughter that bad boy, I say, and let's have all the dedicated Braves fans come out for a "cookout" at season's end.

    Bud.

Great article! And for what it's worth, "there's no crying in baseball"...so, by God, there shouldn't be any cheerleaders either! ;)

Seeing 99% of baseball games at Dodger Stadium I have seen some doozies.

My favorite is a real stand out. Late in the 97(?) season, FOX (NewsCorp) bought the Dodgers from Peter O'Malley. Ted Turner actually showed up at the Owner's Meeting to block the sale (first time since 1989). to know avail. Bud Selig was licking his chops at the thought of such a huge business investing in baseball. I digress.

The first game under FOX ownership was actually the last game of the season. Computer animation was still emerging and FOX wanted to be "cool" and "hip" (antithesis of O'Malley) and showed off this new technology.

A really annoying computer animated kid appeared on the screen before the game started and made stupid comments about the umpires. Then, the unthinkable happened.

During the 7th Inning Stretch the fans got up from their seats to sing along to the classic song. However, there would be no singing. Longtime Dodger Organist Nancy Bea Heffly started the opening bar to "Take Me Out to the Ball Game", then...then...that kid appeared. In his shrill, annoying voice started sining "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" through the Dodger's archiactic PA System (ONE central speaker for the enitre park. ONE). The fans joined in for the chorus - of boos. The song was drowned by a chorus of boos because of the desicration. this was an effort by FOX to make the game more "fun" and "cool". I have never heard boos during the 7th inning stretch. That was the one and only appearance of that "kid"

So yeah, the Tomohawk Team isn't so bad.

JB, I hear so many people trashing the tomahawk girls. yet, when I go to a game, I see some many people jumping up and down wanting what they have to offer.

So I'm a BIG bobblehead fan. It doesn't matter I want it. Collecting them is just so much more fun than baseball cards plus they "bob"!

Luckily, for me, lots of people don't feel this way so I can usually get them fairly cheap on ebay.

    Kyle,

I couldn't agree more. I'll take any bobblehead any way they come. But I start to get demanding in my SGA's because I remember when the Braves gave away very good ones. This year they were a little cheaper quality.

But point being... bobble heads are the best.
