The Launching Pad: Braves Set to Pick Up Vazquez

  • grantmc · 1 year ago
It was a perfect time for the Braves to sell high on Flowers, as he was never a big part of the future plans. He has some power, but a decent season in the mid-minors and a good showing in the AFL are hardly cause to make him an untouchable. Vazquez = innings. His run in the NL represented the best years of his career, and the Braves have coveted him since 2003 when he was dealt to New York. This is not the impact move, but it puts the club in a place to assemble a much more sound rotation for 2009.

Great observation, Grant. It's not an impact move but it's a move to get a proven starter who has remained healthy for years. I believe he'll be a #3 but with all the DL time we had last year, adding someone who most likely get us 30 starts will be very nice.

    Hey JB...

A lot of folks were down on Vazquez this winter after his finish. When the Mets were linked to him, I didn't mind it at all. The guy will get better in the NL and he's a horse. He's a solid No. 3 pitcher -- maybe a No. 2 if he rebounds -- who had a bad reputation because he flopped in New York.

Hey Eddie! Good to see your Mets-lovin' self around here this winter.

Yeah I don't think this is a bad pickup. I'm curious to see what moves y'all will make. I see your hat thrown into a lot rings especially with free agent talks.

Looks like 2 prospects we can't use and 2 prospects at the bottom level with mediocre ceilings and mediocre results thusfar. Maybe not all we could've gotten for Flowers, but from our standpoint we didn't give up much.

According to Mark Bowman [http://bit.ly/RpHX] Reyes is OUT of the Vasquez deal. Unfortunately, it looks like Lilliebridge is gone.

Vasquez isn't a game changer. He's a rotation filler, .500 pitcher and not much more. Pretty unexciting move. But I don't think jo-jo and lilly aren't much to give up for a 30 start guy. Flowers could be good, but what are we going to do with him.

That's a great move for the Braves. For about as cheap as possible too!

I think this is a good pick up for you guys. I wanted him in a Mets uniform a couple years ago. I think he's the type of pitcher who rates to be a couple grades better in the NL

Looks like the Braves will be keeping Reyes, giving up Flowers, Lillibridge, Jon Gilmore and pitcher Santos Rodriguez.
