At least with most of these there was only one bad season.

With the Tampa Bay Rays, they were in last place from their first season until now. With many of those seasons being in the 100+ loss range.

When played right, baseball is a beautiful thing. When it's not ... it can be downright butt-ugly.

The Braves this season have been horrid to watch. Part of it comes from the fact a whole generation of Braves' fans has never experienced a season like this ... if you're 21 or 22 years old, you don't recall a season where the Braves lost 90 games and were buried in the standings by the dawn of August.

The Braves have lost 90 or more games 10 times since moving to Atlanta in 1966 -- 1975-1979, highlighted (or lowlighted, if you will) by a 101-loss campaign in 1977; 1985; and 1987-1990. In Boston, the Braves lost 100-plus games in 1905-06, 1909-1912, 1922-1924, and the aforementioned 1935 season.

Something I never realized until yesterday was the franchise never finished under .500 in Milwaukee, its worst mark in Beer City an 84-78 record in 1963.

It's been a bad season, but a little history makes us realize it could be worse ... hopefully, we've seen the worst, and things will swing upward in 2009.

Good point but we did put the put the "Young Guns of the '90's" out there. They ended up being the "Old DL'ers of '08".

JB, the only thing that I can say is when you put all your stock into senior citizens to lead your team to the playoffs, something is going to break. It is the law of nature. The braves need to get back to the "Young Guns" of the early 90's.

I wouldn't say I'm "comparing" this lousy Braves team to the worst ones in history.

This was just a way to make us feel a little better about 2008 and have fun remembering some of the awfulness over the years.

It's funny you (and AB) mention the Nationals. Because we can't beat them!!

JB, I'm a Mets fan and even I wouldn't put the 2008 Bravos (as Keith Hernandez calls them) up against the dregs of baseball history. They don't have a whole lot going for them right now, that's for sure. But the 2008 Nationals are an embarrassment to Major League Baseball. Clearly, the "parity" that I hear so much about in baseball hasn't made its way to Washington.

Are we ready to put Frank Wren on the hot seat yet?
